Wildlife Agency Arrests Four Men For Keeping 360 Fish Over The Limit

DOUG NOTE: This press release will be heading out across the state, but if you have friends with fishing/hunting FB pages or websites, please send this information on to them. This needs to not happen---EVER. Most of us do what is right, but I agree with localwaters in a post below--this can do major damage if allowed to continue and its simply not right when so many of us abide by our game and fish laws.

----

Wildlife officers commonly issue citations to people who keep more fish than legally allowed, but on Tuesday the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency charged four adult men with the possession of 90 fish above a long-established creel limit.
“That was 90 fish over and above the limit for each of them,” noted arresting Wildlife Officer Brad Bagwell. “The most they could have had in their total possession was 60—or 15 white bass per person-- but they had a total of 420 when they finally quit fishing.”
Also known by many anglers as stripe, this is the time of year when white bass prepare to spawn and school in rivers where eddying current creates ideal habitat for them. Experienced anglers take advantage of this late winter run in the tail-waters below Cumberland River dams.
“Part of the idea of establishing creel limits is to help spread out the amount of fish available to everyone,” noted Bagwell. “This was a lot of white bass that could have been enjoyed by others whether as table fare or just to catch and release.”
The four men, all with Nashville addresses, are set to appear in Cheatham County General Session Court April 24 for a preliminary hearing. Khamnovan Keomanychanh, 60, Kongkham Phenevongsa, 68, So Akhom, 70, and Phay Souksavong, 78, will each face charges of exceeding the daily creel limit six times.
“When I saw how many fish there were, I had the four suspects help separate them into piles of 10 fish each,” said Bagwell. “When we got all them separated there were 42 piles and that came out to 90 fish over the limit per man.”
Bagwell and assisting officers Major Cape Taylor and Wildlife Officer Eric Tummins—called by Bagwell to provide backup--confiscated as evidence ten fishing rods and reels, and the 360 white bass in excess of the legal limit.
“Sometimes we have problems with people illegally netting game fish, “ said Bagwell, “but everyone of these white bass were caught in day with rod, reels, and artificial tackle.”

These 4 old men did wrong, but they most have been good fishermen.
I feel these are the same older men I reported to TWRA doing something like this on the Caney two years a go.

That is ridiculous. Good thing they will have to answer for that.

It reminds me a family members property that I used to deer hunt on back in the mid-late 90's. I was leaving along a ridge logging road walking out and noticed several feeders set up almost on our property line. The adjoining land was owned by Sammy Kershaw. Not too long after that, I was leaving the woods on a separate hunt and met 3 trucks of TWRA agents entering our property by my truck. They asked where I had hunted, checked licenses and asked me if I'd close the gate so the horses wouldn't get out behind them.

It wasn't very long until Sammy got busted for donating 2-3 hundred pounds of deer meat that was taken over the feeders.

That is quite common when fishing for white bass. I have had many....albeit long days.....of 200 fish a day. When they are making their spawning run I crimp the barb down on the hook to get them off quick and get back in the water. Down at Pickwick when they make their run a lot of folks will use 2 jigs on the line....15 casts and 30 fish. I hope the judge takes their boat...truck...and fine them lots.

Regards

From the info I have, they were shore fishing, had all their tackle confiscated, but not the vehicle they used to get there. That should have been confiscated also, IMO.

Hopefully they will get hefty fines (like $75.00 per fish over the limit) and revocation of licensing for five years.

Yeah that is sad. In GA if you had over your limit of trout or didnt have a trout stamp it was $100 per fish.
I would be happy if they gave those effers a $9000 fine each!

Ban them from having a hunting/fishing license for life. Next time they get caught hunting/fishing = deportation!

Why should this be taken off of Doug's FB site, TWRA, etc.? It should be publicized. Hooray for TWRA for making the bust. Hopefully it'll reduce the number of idiots keeping too many fish and damaging the resource.

Oh, and they may be "good" fishermen but in my opinion anyone that can physically cast a line can catch white bass when they're running.
