Default Ft. Lauderdale

Sarah and I are in Ft. Lauderdale for a few days. We started off with a Bass Pro Shops stop, and a casino and horse track, this was my first time watching cart racing. It was fun, but a little slow paced for me.
We have a list of places we want to fish. Yesterday we fished a canal system in Miami for whatever. It's hard to target one species when there are so many different kinds of fish. The air temps were 90-91, with 15-20mph winds and 30mph gusts. We fished jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, trout magnets, Rat-L-Traps, lizards, and topwaters. We caught bluegill, chicilds, and peacock bass. I had a pod of 15-20 small tarpon 30"-35" come up within casting distance, but I wasn't ready. We fished until about an hour and a half beuploadfromtaptalk1427195006295.jpguploadfromtaptalk1427195056246.jpegfore dark, because the Miami canal system is a place I don't really want Sarah after dark. We also saw some 4' iguanas.

Pretty cool man! I bet those small tarpon would have been fun! What's next on the list!

Awesome, know what you mean by the Canal area at night though. If you want to fish at night in that area you could try the Dania Beach Pier @
Dania Beach, FL in Ft. Lauderdale. Its a few bucks to fish off the pier and can be some decent fishing. At least a little safer anyways.

I'm getting nostalgic just reading this post. Living in Ft Lauderdale until I was 18 I spent many hours fishing those canals. Those canals are everywhere, endless, and always full of surprises. Peacock bass, largemouth bass, tilapia, tarpon, you may even find a snook here and there depending on location.

If you want some light tackle fun, hook into an Oscar on 2lb test or on a flyrod. I miss that place so much but one thing that sucks about south Florida is the crime so you're definitely correct on not wanting to be around certain neighborhoods after dark.

How long of a drive was it for you? I'd love to make the haul down there and spend about a week yak fishing canals but I don't enjoy long road trips as much as some do.

Well we made it back last night, or yesterday evening around 4pm.

It's about a 13hr trip. We left Friday March 20th after work and drove to Tifton, Ga, and then Saturday morning drive the reset of the way arriving around 4pm Saturday.

We unloaded and got settled into the condo, and headed to the beach for a nice dinner, and relaxed at the Casino and Horse Races the rest of the evening until around 12am.

Sunday we relaxed and got to know the area a little. We opted not to fish on the weekend due to boat & jet ski traffic.

Monday we fished the Blue Lagoon next to the Miami Airport. We caught bluegill, tilapia, Chicilds, and Peacocks. Had a great meal and spent the evening at the horse track.

Tuesday we went back to the Blue Lagoon and with the same results, and afterward spent the evening at the Horse track again.

Wednesday we went to a local Park and watched Peacocks that would not touch our baits, and caught a few largemouth.

Then afterward hit another we fished another park and caught largemouth.

Thursday we fished a lake and hit some canals off the lake, and done real well with the largemouth and Peacocks. We had a storm blow up on us with some 30mph winds, and 40mph gusts that we had to paddle about 1.5 mile aka 2hrs into to get back to the launch, but well worth it.

Friday we fished a park for Snakeheads, I saw three, but couldn't get a bite, and ended up with 10 or so largemouth.

Since we had a two bedroom condo we invited a friend that enjoys fishing to spend the week with us. He came down Wednesday and had a blast catching his largest largemouth, and many more fish.

Saturday we went to South Fort Lauderdale and hung out at Tap 42 for a while and sampled some beers and then headed to a Ragge show and saw Fortunate Youth, Hirie, Sensamotion, and another band.

Sunday we headed out and drive to Macon, Ga, and finished the drive yesterday.

We had some of the most amazing Cuban, and Spanish food.

This vacation was one of our better vacations, it was a blast, and we did something different besides troll for Kings, Spanish and Mahi off the beach.
