Do you have a pic of your reel or know what the make/model is? Basically all it does is hold the line. Do you know the line size that's on the reel?

The line is the governing factor because it is what throws the fly. Spinning rod the lure is your weight to cast distance, Fly rod your line is the weight since the fly is so light to cast distance.

Rods- a 8'6" or 9' will cover about everything length wise. As for rod "heaviness" a 5 weight rod (which is the line's weight designation to load it) would be about as general purpose as you can get. If you tend to want bass more then I would step up to a 6 weight that can handle more bass yet still light enough for trout or bluegill.
