You asked does reel have anything to do with distance of cast,I think so along with the rod.

Today in the wind on the Elk I was able to cast at least 30 to 40 feet without a split shot and further with one bb shot. I use 2 lb test line

Today they were hitting white and nothing else.Usually on the Elk it is always a pink T M. I only fish the T M under float.
