Believe it or not it is normally not a problem. I float down the river backwards, in other words the back of boat is floating down the river first. I also normally leave my engine running so if I do need to correct I just have to engage the motor with the tiller steer handle. Most of the time I am in the middle of the river so it is no problem while I am landing a fish. That is the benefit of throwing those big cranks is that you can cast them a long distance and cover a lot of water, thus you can be out in the middle of the river away from over hanging trees and etc.
