Info on bank fishing at Fate Sanders
 

Is it easy access to some good bank fishing at Fate Sanders Rec Area?

There are some small bluff walls there. You can get all the way to the bridge on the path they have leading into the woods. Most the spots to fish are on 5 foot high bluffs.

Fishing under the bridge can be a little hairy if your balance is a little off. But when you walk right of the boat ramp towards the picnic tables there are plenty of spots all the way up the bridge that are easily accessible. I was talking to a guy fishing in his boat while I was on one of the rocks and he said it drops to about 12-15 feet within the first 10 feet from the shoreline. It then drops down to over 20 feet just passed that. The bream and shell cracker all seem to be stacking up in the 5-10 foot water right at the bank. I'm hoping the deeper drop off will start producing some nice cats and bass the next few trips out.

Thanks guys. I checked it out today.....all around today. The water looks good there. I caught a bunch of 5 inch Gills but that was all I could find. It is a little rough for an overweight man in his mid 60's.....LOL.

Since you say it was a little rough, I assume you were fishing from the bank rather than in your kayak.

I was wondering if you caught those on Trout Magnets. I didn't think gills that size could be caught on TM's because of their small mouths. I was into some gills that size once, and they wouldn't touch the TMs except for a few small nibbles. I was using 4# mono and a float. I did manage to catch some on other lures.

Also, did you use 2# mono with a 2# fluoro leader? Or do you reserve the fluoro till the trout are around?

Dennis I always use 2# test with the Trout Magnets...nothing else. I use a fluorocarbon leader also....even though I am not fishing for trout IMHO it makes a difference. Many will say it does not but I have been doing it for so long too late to change now. I would try using 2# test and see if you have better success. Many articles I have read recently speak of bluegill being line shy....this summer is the first I have ever read about that and I know many will chime in saying it is not so...and they may be right.....but it is something I am going to delve further into. Right now I am not sure if they are line shy or not. I didn't take my kayak yesterday as it was too windy for me. It is some nice looking water and I am sure there are fish there. But it can be tricky crawling around those rocks and bluffs.

Alpha.... Since it was windy, did you choose to use a float and let the wind move the TM, or do you still prefer to twitch it in. I seem to snag constantly unless I use a float.

I fished it both ways. Hanging up is part of fishing a shad dart micro jig head...or any jig head for that matter. That day at Pickwick I lost well over a dozen jig heads...but the fish were deep in the rocks so thats where I had to fish. The more you fish it the less you will hang up. It took my son a while to figure out how far to let it fall before he got hung up but he soon developed the knack for fishing it. If I am fishing a new spot and I have no clue how deep it is I might sacrifice a couple of jig heads to find out. Once I know where the bottom is I count down to the bottom, then the rest of the day I know how long to let it fall before I start my retrieve just off the bottom.
