KY Lake 5/12/2014
 

Headed back to get into the Gills if they were still around. I was afraid someone had probably gotten to them over the weekend and cleaned out the whole lot of them. Well 40 of them were still there but that was it. So I just crawled over the rocks at a spot that has always held them before and no one ever fishes because it is in the current, and I think most folks don't think any Gills would be there bedding. There is a hump out from the bank and then it drops off to deep water. They were just on the deep side drop off of the hump. I picked up 111 more along with two Smallies...11 and 12 inches.....and one female cross between Gill and a shell cracker...mostly Gill but had the fight of a shell cracker and the body colors except no red on the ear. I seem to always get a few of these each year now. Had a great time and will just have to keep hitting KY Lake until the water becomes too hot in that area and they leave. These Gills are just too much fun and with their size I am just going to wear them out as long as I can. All fish were caught on 2# SOS line using a Bison and Purple Redemption Trout Magnet twitching. I was using the new Panfish Hook today with the longer shaft...it works really well. Kayak trailer parts came in today so will probably take a day or two break to get those installed.....if I can stand to not fish that long....LOL. Life is good!

I wish....I know your just kidding around Jimmy but ten inch Gills are true trophies.....even 8 and 9 inch Gills are considered trophies in most places. I have several under my belt. Most of them have come from Laurel Hill Lake......some from VFW Lake....and a few from Dale Hollow. If I can get in on the spawning action at Dale Hollow at the right time I could catch a lot of 10 inch fish.....but timing for the Gill bite up there is critical. I here a lot of people say "caught a bunch of 10 inch Gills". But I want to see the fish on the ruler.....not a lot of places have 10 inch Gills....and a 10 inch shell cracker is not the same.....there are plenty of those. I should get a few from the kayak at Laurel Hill this year with the help of the side imaging. Here is a pic of a 10.5 inch Gill out of Laurel Hill....you can tell quite a difference in the 9 inch fish I am catching now at KY Lake. Dale Hollow is full of Gills like in this pick. But I am very happy with the action I am getting at KY Lake right now......nice fish and a lot of them. Any big Gills in that pond you were fishing?

Yeah Nomad I have my share....LOL. Summer will be here soon enough and we will all be trying hard to find fish when that water gets to be 90 degrees....LOL. So I am enjoying the action now....LOL.

Yea they were driving me crazy pecking at my finesse worms. I can't tell you how many hooksets came up empty, most of that had to be bluegill. Craig said he actually has caught them on smaller crankbaits while bass fishing in there. I had my flyrod and wanted to fish for gills hoping for a 10 incher but decided to stick to bass. Next time I go with him I'll see if I can find any.

Just kidding. Thats a true brute. The ones I have caught pushing 10 were not that tall so they must be mixed genes of some sort.

And here I am amazed when I catch a 9 incher. A ten incher only comes along in my dreams!

A nine inch bluegill is a great Gill no matter how you cut it....but a 10 inch fish just don't come along too often. That whole bed of 9 inch Gills I was fishing in last Friday is completely wiped out....all of them harvested. I just hope no one has found the bed I was on on yesterday.
