Pickwick Gills.
9 Attachment(s)
What do you do when you have had a slow summer fishing and you get on a pattern of bluegill but they are only at the 7-8 inch mark......you put up the 2# test...break out the Major Craft FineTail Banshee 6' 7" Area UL trout rod strung up with 1# test line and have a ball. Hit Pickwick today and found the Gills on a ledge. I had a Panfish jig head rigged with a Bison colored Trout Magnet and a size"BB" split shot..... had to keep it on the bottom or no fish. I would cast into 8 feet of water and very slowly retrieve to the edge of the ledge...which dropped to 27 feet.....then bam.....fish on every cast. They were all in the 7-8 inch range...very chunky hard fighting fish. I spent 5 hours spot locked in one location and boated around 150 Gills....and one very nice shell cracker....I did take about a 20 minute break for lunch and put the Bimini up for a little shade. It was a great day and I am going back tomorrow.....have a rod rigged up to drop shot the Trout Magnet in the 27 foot depth.....life is good!

Nice. Pound for pound gills are some of the best fighting fish out there and with ultralight gear it's an absolute blast. If those guys grew to 4 or 5 lbs there'd be a lot of popped lines.

Bully on That
Like you I am into ultra light. Purchased some 2.0 and 2.5 lbs fluorocarbon in Japan last month. Can't wait to use it . Also bought some 2lbs nylon line which is black but it casts like a frickin dream. Add a floro leader and I am set.
Good report. |
Sounds like a blast. Use the right gear for the situation.
