Tying some sauger jigs tonight
 

Ofcourse, i looked more at price than product and bought belly hair, instead of buck tail. Got a few tied up, uglier than sin. Lol.
Headed out tomorrow with a few more dollars to buy the right stuff.
The belly hair is kinda nice though, shorter and stiffer, but its harder to work with. Got some flashy stuff in there too. Lol.
Nothing is gonna feel better than when i hammer that hook on my own hand tied jig deep into that log and snap it off. LMAO.

Fatman on crappie dot com had some bucktail for sale last week. really good prices and lots of colors. Might want to check it out, if you use lots of buck tail.

How heavy of jig are you using? I have had trouble in the past finding 1 oz jig heads that I like (discontinued Do-It wally). I compromised and found a good source for 1 oz football heads that will work.

I actually just picked up a bulk order of jigs i got from York Bait Company in Carthage, Tn.
Not sure the exact name for this head style, but it cuts the water great. I ordered 1oz and 1.5oz. I got them unpainted and undressed.
I avoid football heads unless i just absolutely have to.

That is a minnow head.

Ive heard it called several things, minnow being one.
Shad, walleye, wally, striper head, ect.
Either way, ive got enough to last me a while. Lol

All you really need are some old sparkplugs for sinkers with a number 4 plain hook tied on about a one foot leader.
Hook a creek minnow on the hook and drop'er down.
Anyways, this is how SAMBOLIE sauger fishes.

Believe it or not, I had an elderly aunt who used spark plugs for weights when fishing the current below Joe Wheeler.

Just so you understand the proper way to do this Merv. The plugs should be removed from the motor.

Funny thing, when i picked up the jigs, i was talking with Daryl York for a while and he said: i hope ya lose em to come get more, but i hope ya dont lose em at the same time. Lol.
Once that surface temp hits 60 consistantly, im river bound till spring!

Ive done just that during times of no generation, or a floating jighead works good too.
