Caney Fork report from Saturday
 

A friend and I hit the Caney Fork River Saturday. Ended up with about 35 fish. Half were redeye in a little secondary Creek we fished for a while. All the Rainbow trout were the size you see in the picture. We used trout magnets small crank baits and small spoons to catch the trout.

Gotta' love those red eye
I was there on Saturday from 2am-9am. Caught 22" & 25" brown and two huge crappie. Nothing like battling in the inky darkness.

What were they caught on ?

That place gets to be a lot of fun in the hot Summer if you go at night. In the day, too hot and too many drunks.

I went Friday and Saturday night. Nailed a couple nice keeper walleye (I'll let you guess where they wound up) and also a few decent Browns. One flopped out of my kayak before I could get a pic for Kayak Wars. Also a few bass, short walleye, and the usual stockers were around.

Fishing this place at night is truly becoming my favorite thing to do in the Summer. If you're wading, bring a headlamp and go at night during low water. That's when the big trout come out. I have caught several in the 17-21" range this and last Summer, both rainbows and browns.

Night Life
 

Yeah, I am falling in love with the night fishing.
I am going this weekend as well. You get a nice smattering of species and as you noted, I have caught a huge fish each time. Last time 22", this past weekend 25' on the nose. Second biggest. I am looking for that 30' beast. If you see me out there, give me a holler. I'll be in the 10 foot john boat with my 13 feet rods.

I honestly care much more to catch Walleye than the trout. The trout often get a little jacked up from the jerkbaits and I know they're sensitive fish, like college students who need "safe spaces". I've been trying to slow down my retrieve and leave longer pauses. The Walleye seem to like that more and I've realized I get more trout with more aggressive jerks and short pauses. I really do enjoy it at night though. The bats creep me out a bit but that's ok.

Same if you see my lime green kayak come say hi.

Yes I'd like to get over there for some night fishing too for the bigger trout!! If the water is right are there a lot of people that Wade below the dam area or is it mostly kayaks?

I would not recommend wading below the dam. Too many deep holes and those rocks are very slick because they're covered in algae. You'll surely fall and if you fall in a deeper hole it can be bad. Stick to wading downstream in areas where there is gravel to walk on.

My biggest Brown to date was right at 22" and I caught it wading at Happy Hollow actually. At night though, no crowds. I waded high but falling water and was very careful with my footing and it nailed a jerkbait.

NIght Wade
 

I would not wade at night. The water is not terribly deep but cold. You don't want waders filled with 52 degree water and toothy trout.

LOL... They are a little bothersome. Have you been wading yet and one of the beavers brush by you in the moonlight underwater?

That will wake you up. :D

I wade year round up there at night and have been just as cold on a summer night wet wading as I have in waders on a February night. Many nights walking the river when the fog creeps down it feels like the temps drop 10 degrees.

More than once and yes they'll give you a scare.

A couple outings ago I was standing in the yak, pitch black, and all of a sudden I heard squealing and splashing all around me. I was near the bank. Evidently I spooked a nest of wood ducks, I think they were wood ducks, and they startled me so badly I almost lost my balance and fell in.
