Gar Fishing
 
I've seen a couple videos and it looks like fun. Sight casting streamer flies made from nylon rope to catch in their teeth. It's supposed to be productive even during the dog days... There are places on Tim's Ford where there are hundreds breaking the surface all day long.

A few years back all I did when it got really hot was catch gar. I've used the rope lures and cut bait with treble hooks. The spot I fish is loaded, You get a bite within minutes of the bait being in the water. The treble hook method works but I bet it's a 25% catch rate to bites. It's a lot of fun.

Would love to hear any pointers... locations.....etc.... I can tell you one spot I've tried on Tims Ford that is packed ..... the shallows along the northeast shore just south of Neal bridge:

When I see a school of them and want to catch one I take a crankbait and throw it out then just twitch across the surface. They’re a blast.

Can you post Jimmy's recipe for cooking Gar?

I have always to try eating them. They are supposed to be good. I have heard,since there skin is so tough, taking a sawzall and cutting there head and tails off and using scissors/snips to cut down the back bone, peel back the skinand take out the back straps and make garballs.

I don't think he ever made it that far, usually just 20" Smallmouth.

Gut the gar and cut the head off. Then put it on a cedar plank and grill it real slow trying to keep the temperature around 225. Then after 4 hours, on the grill remove the fish and throw it in the garden for fertilizer and eat the plank.

I use almost the same recipe, but I’m more 210 for 5 hours. I find it makes the gar a little more tender and easier to slide into the garden.
