Shimano Sedona 500 vs. 1000
 

Hey guys, I was looking for a decent reel for lightweight trout fishing and pan fishing. I seen this one on the trout magnet website in the 1000 series. I like to keep my rod and reel as light as possible, I was just curious why trout magnet recommended the 1000 over the 500. Line capacity maybe? It looks like the 500 is quite a bit lighter than the 1000. I fish with Pflueger now, but am looking to switch over to shimano.

line twist, smaller spools have more of it.

Diawa SS tournament 700 or 1300 size is my preference.

The 500 spool is just too small and makes managing line more difficult....as bfish stated. Stick with the 1000 series and you will be fine. Shimano made a 750 series but not anymore. It was a 500 body with a 1000 series spool on it. I can tell you on all of Jeff Smiths rods are Stradic ci4+ reels. You won't go wrong with a Shimano in the 1000 series. I have tried all major brands of reels. Outside of the reels made in Japan, Shimano's are the best...IMHO. The Daiwa SS is a good reel but no instant anti-reverse and I am so used to fishing with it I can't switch over...I tried just didn't like it. But the Daiwa SS will last you forever...it is a design that has gone unchanged for almost 40 years....but the Shimano should last you a long time also. I tried the new Pfleuger Supreme XT's......they are sitting on my shelf. For me now if I can't have a JDM reel I will stick with the Shimanos.

Definitely line capacity. The 500 is a small reel. You hook a good fish on light line, wouldn't be hard for it to spool you. Casting distance will also be better with the 1000. I have a Sahara 750 too, but like the 1000 better.

I have all three,500,750,and 1000 plus Stradic ci4+ reels.
I only use the first three when others want to use one of rod and reels to learn how to use T M's. Before switching to Stradic I used just the 750.

My wife's favorite reel is the Shimano CI4. She has 6-7 ranging from the 1000ML, 1000, 2500, and 3000 Series.

I used the Sedona 1000 for the 1st time Saturday night on the Caney and was very impressed. Drag was like butter on the larger brook trout. Thanks for the advice again. I spooled line according to these directions. I use PLine 4lb. Flouro clear. Is this how you guys spool Shimanos? It seems to work great so far....

That's the way the Japanese spool line and they are masters of spinning reels.
