Rock Island State Park
 

My wife and I will be at Rock Island State Park next month. I'm thinking of taking my fly rod, but wondering if anyone knows if there is decent fishing to be had from the banks, water levels and conditions aside, of course. I'd appreciate any Rock Island advice y'all can share. Thanks!

Just keep in mind that we've had a ton of rain and all the rivers are full. Who is to say what it will be like come Feb, but if it doesn't stop raining for a couple weeks, I'd say the waters will be really flowing making tough for fly fishing.

Thanks, guys. I realize the water may not be conducive at all to fishing when we get there. I'm just curious if conditions are ok, is there decent bank fishing to be had within the park and if so, what might I expect to find? Thanks again!

I fish there quite a bit Jan through May. As others have said, it all depends on the conditions and release from the Great Falls dam.

Bank fishing options are rather limited due to both the current and the rocks and brush. However, a popular bank fishing spot is just to the right of the boat ramp about 40 yards. Have seen guys pull out quite a few crappie and bass there using minnows and bobbers.

The walleye are tough to get to from the bank - they are generally out in the current.

If your dead set on just fly fishing it would definitely be worth the drive to center hill dam in buffalo valley. If their not generating, tons of places to catch trout there.
