I taste tested 5 species of fish today for lunch. I had spotted bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and yellow bass. Below is the list of the flavors and textures. I will rank them also.

1. Spotted Bass from cool water-Tasted as mild as crappie but firmer
2. Crappie- tasted very mild and melt in your mouth flavor but mushier that spotted bass
3. Bluegill- Mild with a almost nutty flavor
4.Catfish- Mushy texture with a watery flavor
5. Yellow Bass- firm and fishier than crappie

I like to make a habit of eating nothing but 20+" Smallmouth Bass and 24+" Brown Trout. :D

In all seriousness:
1- Walleye
2 - Bass
3 - Trout
4 - Crappie (only above white bass because they're easier to fillet)
5 - White Bass/Striper/Hybrid

TNBronzeback 02-10-2014 05:32 PM

Here we go:

#1-Common Carp
#2-Sheepshead (drum)
#3-Skipjack
#4-Gar
#5-Gizzard Shad

Okay, seriously:
#1-Perch
#2-Walleye
#3-Crappie
#4-Hybrid (have striper in the freezer, havent tried yet)
#5-Trout
#6-Catfish (2-3lbs)

I can put you on some gar during the summer months. I thought about trying gar balls sometimes but the way those things stink, I am afraid to eat them.

I cant say ive ever actually caught a gar....thumped plenty of them with my bow, snagged a few below old hickory, but never caught one.
gar head would make a cool skull mount though, all them teeth!

XxthejuicexX 02-10-2014 05:50 PM

It is a blast fishing for them. It's one of those things that the hotter the better with the weather. I have a spot here in murfreesboro on the stones that you can hook into one on every cast. They put up a heck of a fight and can jump like a smallmouth. My best was 58" and it put on a show. I did it once in my kayak but almost had the fish jump into the yak with me, last time I did that.

How can you tell which is a boy gar to get the "gar balls" you mentioned?

There is a muddy trail below the boy gar when in shallow water.

SAMBOLIE 02-10-2014 07:12 PM

If anyone wants to load the boat with gar just fish the mouth of White's creek. It is only a few yards up from Briley Pkwy. bridge and Ford Glass.

LOL....

It really depends on how it's cooked I guess for me. Everything tastes the same fried.

I have baked some marinated sauger in teriyaki, butter boiled some striper like lobster and had catered salmon at my wife's work functions that are all pretty incredible to my taste buds.

As for just fried the OH Tilapia have been the absolute best for texture, firmness and as good taste that I have had fried in any species.

LOL! Good stuff right there:D

Crappie and bream are my favorites, but I never turn down buffalo. Buffalo ribs are possibly one of the best kept secrets among fishermen. Don't turn your nose up until you try them.

XxthejuicexX 02-11-2014 08:34 AM

What about buffalo wings...... Those are tasty.

No, however I have eaten fried fish eggs from other species.

I didn't think they had a lot of taste.

SAMBOLIE 02-11-2014 01:18 PM

How many have eaten smelt and did you like them.

TNBronzeback 02-11-2014 02:21 PM

ive eaten them and they were great. the only place i ever ate them was straight out of the St. Clair River in Michigan. it was a big to-do. several of us would go out, bring a turkey fryer kinda thing (they werent called turkey fryers 15-18 years ago, just big pots of oil on a propane burner)
we would net then, dump them in a bucket and sombody got the scissors, snipped the head, pulled the guts and tossed em in egg wash, some kind of dry fish fry mix and right to the hot oil within 5 minutes of being netted.
just like eating french fries. lol.
