In search of a fly rod. Nothing fancy or expensive. I have a reel and would like to start trying fly fishing again.

No clue. My grandfather gave me the rod and reel when I was young and I broke the rod a couple years after he gave it to me. I don't know anything about flyfishing so I just want something to learn with. Do different lengths matter with different fishing environments? Are there only certain poles that would work with my reel?

Do you have a pic of your reel or know what the make/model is? Basically all it does is hold the line. Do you know the line size that's on the reel?

The line is the governing factor because it is what throws the fly. Spinning rod the lure is your weight to cast distance, Fly rod your line is the weight since the fly is so light to cast distance.

Rods- a 8'6" or 9' will cover about everything length wise. As for rod "heaviness" a 5 weight rod (which is the line's weight designation to load it) would be about as general purpose as you can get. If you tend to want bass more then I would step up to a 6 weight that can handle more bass yet still light enough for trout or bluegill.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the reel when I get home and post a pic. Does the reel type have any bearing on what line weight to use? I suppose I'll be getting new line since it's basically been sitting in a box for the past 10 or so years.

It depends a little in the reel type for line size.

Depending on reel type and what size line you want to go I have a 6 weight rod you can have. Probably some line in there too to get you started back at least. Its a dogwood canyon bass pro brand rod, slow action and has caught plenty of bass, crappie, bluegill and trout.
