I fished in the porter paint tournament today out of sanders ferry park. Did not place but I did catch my first smallie. Weighed 3.74.

The lower end of Old Hickory has some good smallmouth.

Why you gotta go and say something like that?

Biggest smallmouth I've ever had on the line was on Old Hickory. There are some big fish on the lower end for sure. They get overlooked a lot by the guys targeting largemouth.

I just need to figure out how to target them.

I just need to figure out how to target them.

Just start looking for them in the old river channel to the Dam. That's around Cages Bend to the Dam. Lots of rock shelf's and "fingers" to fish in the summer/winter thru that stretch. Also don't discount drifting over the old sand bars with deep diving shad cranks or live shad. I have caught a bunch on silver buddy's hopping the down the bluff's and craw imitations. Watch for changes in rock composition like a rock wall to chunk rock bank, big rock to small rock, rock to silt...etc.

If you catch a good one don't just leave to the next likely spot like largemouth fishing. Smallmouth tend to be a schooling fish and school with similiar size smallies.

Travis has the locations right - they tend to hold along the old river channel on the lower end of the lake. For whatever reason, the bigger smallmouth seem to be more selective than largemouth. If you take a tank of live creek minnows out there, you'll be amazed at the number of smallmouth you can catch in spots where you only catch largemouth on artificials.
