After being on the water all day Sunday and the wife and son at home. Got me to thinking. The wife will not get on a fishing type of boat. She says it scares her and I will not push the issue. " Been married for awhile " She will however get on a pontoon. I was thinking of selling or trading my boat for a smaller 18-22' Pontoon that I could still fish from and the family could also go.

Any thought or suggestions from people that have fished from them? I see people all the time doing it.

I have never been on one fishing like you would a bass boat but a couple that used to camp with us had one. It was a smaller bass buggy (I believe) and they had rod holders for trolling. That was all we ever did and it was fun. The wives would chat and the guys would BS (male chatting) with occaisional stripe/crappie mixed in.

My wife wants one sooner or later but since my other rides are paid for they ain't going anywhere we'll just add to them.

I owned a 21 ft Beachcomber for several years and fished and camped off of it quite often during the summer. It had a full "playpen" (railing) around the front deck which made boating a larger fish a little difficult and retrieving a snagged lure sometimes was awkward. I would recommend getting one that has a fishing platform out in front of the "playpen" for those reasons as well as giving you a better place to mount your trolling motor. Mine was mounted in the gate opening on the front of the boat and got in the way when you were getting on and off the boat. It was also a pain to load your stuff on the boat and unload because you had to get on the boat to retrieve your things. HOWEVER, we had a great time on the boat. It fished very comfortably and maneuvered well with the trolling motor. On those hot, sunny days you can put up the canopy and take a nap in the shade, too.

A high sided deep-Vee, Lund-styled, multi-species fishing boat is a much better option than a pontoon.
