OK here it is, this is the format that I have come up with.

Categories:

1. Large Mouth/ small mouth = big fish
2. Pan fish = total weight
3. Catfish = big fish

Large mouth and Smallmouth must be alive.
If you catch a giant catfish and want to CPR, weigh it, take photo and have a witness.

If all agree then we can take up $10.00 per angler and Have gift cards for 1st place winners.

The date will be June 30th (Sat). Start time 06:30 and end at noon.
Location: Lagaurdo rec area, Old Hickory Lake on Hwy 109 in Lebanon.

There are picnic tables and a sand beach for swimming, now as far as food, I can bring my grill and I think that if you just brought what you want to eat and drink would be the best. I will bring extra burgers and buns and what not. What would be great if we could get some of our wifes to come and hold a spot for us...

If we all agree on the gift card, K-mart has Basspro gift cards that we could get. The date should give all advance notification to be able to attend.

This is going to be an awesome event and I am looking forward to meeting you all.

Don

PS...any legal means of fishing, be it cane pole, trolling what ever as long as it is legal, any type of bait as long as it is legal can be used. Pan fishers please only weigh in fish that you would normally keep for table fare. This will be an individual event, so if you have more than one person in your boat then it is up to you to keep track of your fish! Maybe use culling markers. The date has been changed to June 30th so that TK can attend. Also you may fish from the bank as long as you are within the Law..

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds fair to me. I want to mention something and get yall's opinion. What if we throw the whole tournament idea out the window with this being our first ever gathering. We can all meet up on the set date and fish for fun with whatever means possible whether it be on the bank, yak, boat etc.... At the set time to return we fire up the grill, hang out and have a good time. With all this being said, whoever would be interested in having a tournament on another date, could be discussed there.
Again, just throwing it out there and seeing what everyone thinks. I feel we would have alot more people come if it didnt have a "Tournament' atmosphere. I fish quite a few tournaments and i know some people are turned off by them.
Not to knock your ideas Jugger, which are great. Dont want you to get the wrong idea of what i'm saying.

This is not a tourney, it is going to be just as you described. I just tossed the idea of collecting $10.00 for a gift card. We do not have to do that at all it was just a suggestion. When all show up we will discuss it then!

So we're grilling afterwards? Sounds great, hopefully nobody will go around preaching to some of us about what fish we should and shouldn't eat though...

If you have some folding tables please bring them, that way we could put all the food on one long table, bring your yard chairs to sit also. I am working on trying to get a large grill big enough to cook lots of food on. Also if you have any of those pop up shelters that would be great.

I hope to be able to make it, but I doubt I'll compete in any of the tournament fishing. It'll be nice to meet everyone and maybe grill some good food though.

As far as holding a spot ... I am not fishing this time ... I am going to set up my EZ-UP and make it the Fishing TN.COM Headquarters ... So everyone bring a folding chair and set it up in the immediate area around the EZ and we will stake our turf .... I think they do have Bar B Que grills or at least they did in the past ... I think Nixon was President ... or was it Johnson :D ... We will get there early enough to probably get any picnic site we want ... <'TK>< PS .... I have some sharpies and labels that everyone can write their names on and stick them on your shirt ... Don't know how long they will stick, but I have plenty ......

I hate to say that I won't be able to make it on that date, but I hope you guys have a great time and catch some fish. I also hope its a successful gathering so there will be more in the future that I can attend!

Like so many others I love the site and the friendly exchange of information. I feel like I've learned a lot on the site (even though I can rarely get Priest to cooperate) and I really appreciate everyone's posts. Have a great get together!

This is a great idea. I would like to join this gathering.

I usually fish from the bank as I do not have a boat. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to be on a boat if anyone can accommodate. I have fishing gears (and life jacket), just need some space on a boat. I can share gas costs too. :) It will be a dream come true for me to catch fish from a boat, looking forward to the gathering.

for example,

So be thinking about what you can bring, do not worry about posting it now. I will get to that closer to the 30th.

Thanks!

Lord have mercy, I miss one day on this topic and i have to go back 2 pages just to get caught back up! LOL

Anyway, went out on OH yesterday and it wasnt very impressive. They have dropped the water a foot, which had the fish pretty skiddish. Most of the grass i had planned on topwater fishing were almost high and dry. Saved the trip by fishing bluffs and managed some good fish.
To all the bowfishers, there were carp and gar all over the place up shallow.

Thanks for reposting the outline Newbie.

If someone chooses to fish from the bank, will they need to be at launch and leave with everyone else? What if they catch a bass/mess of panfish down lake somewhere off the bank. Are they required to bring them back or can they CPR those as well since they have to car ride the fish.

I am sure everyone wants to see fish at the end of the deal but don't want to see some die due to a car ride its bad enough in a boat after a hot day. If they are going to eat them then its no issue.

Travis, go back and read these 79 post and bring yourself up to speed .. http://www.fishingtn.com/showthread.php?t=5225 , also would not hurt to go back and read Page one, post one all the way to the last thread on this posting ...

This is a gathering of FTI members, not a tourney, If it is legal any member can do what he wants to do with his fish, (No brow beating if anyone keeps fish if it is legal) If they are fishing for bass from the bank it would be their responsabilty to keep it alive in a tank and aerator in the vehicle. Just like a boat ... If he is fishing for the award.

Like previously stated this is our first "Gaithering" and looking to have a lot of fun meeting the members ... Also previously stated we will be continuing updating information right up to the Gathering date of June 30th ...

For instance all members must meet at Laguardo at the offical FTI site ... So we can meet and make sure everyone is on the same page with times etc ... ... Folks will leave in boats and maybe cars/trucks as well ... The honor system on Livewells, Ice Chest etc ... If any member feels that He or She has to cheat to win during a fellowship meeting, well they need more help than what FishingTN.com can supply.:o

Organnizing a free style fun time like this ... IS NOT EASY (Hats off to TNJUG) ... and we are not going to bog it down with a lot of DETAILS, RULES and REG'S. ... As far as the $10 for the three catagories, well, that can be voluntary but only the particpants that entered will be eligible ...

I and all of the members are really looking forward to looking at a name tag (use both your Username and Sir name) and putting a face with the name ... Looking forward for those who are fishing for the first time in a boat ... who has never had the opportunity to do so but now from a FishingTN member who is gracious enough to take out a member who would have been bank bound . Also looking forward to the food and fellowship ... This is what FishingTN. com is all about ... And I thank you ... <'TK>< :)

I will have an open spot in my boat as well.

If anyone wants to learn how to fly fish for gills or bass let me know and I'll plan on just bringing fly rods etc.

Otherwise, I will just be chasing whatever with regular gear and leave the other at home.

We will see who needs rides etc. That morning ... better yet .. Maybe the week before the "Gathering" we will get a list of the folks with a spare boat seat ... and a list of folks who need a ride and pair these folks up before hand to expedite things ... But to be honest no time clock is an issue here ... party time and fellowship is what this is going to be about .... <'TK>< :)

If I get to make it, I plan on jug fishing. Nice, slow relaxing. That means I can take two other fellas on my boat. So anyone who wants to relax and jug fish you can hang with me. If I get to make it, I plan on jug fishing. Nice, slow relaxing. That means I can take two other fellas on my boat. So anyone who wants to relax and jug fish you can hang with me. If we happen to catch a big catfish, one of my two fishing partners can have the prize or split it between themselves. I'm just here for the fun and party!

I may be interested in that! Or I was thinking of "Photographing" the event. But relaxing in a boat sounds awesome too!

MN,
let's stay in touch. Jug fishing is fun and relaxing. We may start out at the meeting site, then trailer the boat to below OH Dam, put in, fish for a few hours, then trailer back to the park. I just think the catfishing will be better below the dam, having never fished up in the lake section.
I'm not concerned with winning anything, just looking to meet a bunch of the guys on this site and make some new friends.

Been away for a few weeks as I'm finishing my last year of law school while working full time. So, glad I saw this event though. It's during my break from school and looks to be a great time! I also just picked up a used kayak to get out on the water and fish some.

I have to check a few things on my schedule but I will most likely be able to make this.

There is some great jug fishing at Spencer Creek where the Gathering will be located, but you need to check the regs. Last I thought jug fishing was not allowed on the weekends during the day due to heavy boat traffic.

Last I thought jug fishing was not allowed on the weekends during the day due to heavy boat traffic.

On TWRA lakes there is a no weekends and certain holidays during some on the year but not major reservoirs. Pretty much the only jug regs are Name, TWRA ID# on each, limit 50 per angler with a single hook on each, can't be within a 1000 yards (just over a half mile) of below a dam and must be ran at least one time a day.

agelesssone
05-23-2012, 08:11 AM
Well, that knocks out the thought of juggin. Below OH dam begins Cheatham Lake so apparently that would remove it from the list of fishable lakes on the weekends.
I'm glad you brought this up as I didn't know about the 1000 yard distance you couldn't jug fish below the dam. And hadn't given much thought to juggin the "river" on the weekends. But it has been explained to me that below every major river dam in TN begins the next lake/reservoir technically (and legally).

Looks like I'll have to try something else.

Travis C.

You are fine as long as you don't get within that distance.

Old Hick, Cheatham and are Corps of Engineers not TWRA managed lakes.

TWRA lakes are ones like Marrowbone where you have to typically pay a fee to use and be off at a certain time.

Travis C.

But it has been explained to me that below every major river dam in TN begins the next lake/reservoir technically (and legally).

This is correct regarding regulations and in some instances if there is a tailwater running into it like say the Stones does then it will fall on the regs of what body its running into.

The Stones from mouth to Percy Dam is under Cheatham regs.

Just throwing this out there...

I already mentioned that I don't have a boat so would like to get in with someone. If anyone happens to be a striper guy, I'm dying to hook one of those things so if for this gathering you want to take a boat ride to below OH Dam and get after stripers or anywhere else on OH that you have knowledge of their existence, pick me! I'll gladly pitch in for gas since it may be a long boat ride. It would be a great opportunity for me to not only make a new friend/fishing buddy, but also finally hook a striper (or 7).

Tim's is not Corps its TVA (check my links).

TWRA techincally manages not just all lakes but all flora/fauna in TN.

The difference is the 18 TWRA managed lakes are designed and regulated especially for family fishing, these lakes prohibit alcoholic beverages, houseboats, inboard motors, water skiing, personal watercraft, and swimming. Usually, there is also a fee to fish and rent boats if available. They will have some special regulations for creel/size of some species too.

OK, sounds like jug fishing is back on since I won't be on a TWRA lake.

And I'll take a trip down the river with my GPS to see where 6/10ths of a mile is (to clear the 1000 yd mark) AND THEN, make sure there are no creek mouths that I have to be at least 100 yds away from!!

I'm kinda surprised they don't tell me what bait I am allowed to use on my ONE hook.

This will make it interesting. I guess I'll have to pick up all my jugs before thye get to the creek mouth, ferry them downriver 200 yds and re-deposit them in the water, huh?

Travis C.

That is just for trotlines. The single hook I am sure is a safety issue.

With the temps being mid 70's at Rockland they are probably higher up river towards the gathering. Does anyone know if the cats have spawned or started to yet?

You might do just as good on some flats back in one of the creek arms. Just a thought.

The blues and flats should be done. May the 5th on the main channel outside misty cove was 78 , that was after it rained hard that morning so I don't know how that affected the temp. It was up around 81 in the shallow spots. The big cats will start their spawn in 70-72 degree water , so I'm thinking they should be finished or real close to it

I have been in Fla. So please look at the list below and if your name is not on it please reply.

This gathering is for Fishing TN.com members only, if you have a friend that would like to attend then they must become a member. As of right now this will still be held at Laguardo rec area. You can launch you boat and beach it over by the picnic table area, it is all sand there. Look for TK's Headquarters setup.

Once I see that the list has been updated and completed I will then ask each of you to bring a food item and or beverage.

THIS IS NOT A FISHING TOURNY!!!!!!

Just a good time of fellowship and fishing!

It not something you would go to search out. BUT..

Some do get caught from time to time. Its not often and they are usually big. A few years ago a 5lb bow was caught while catfishing around Saunders Ferry Park and a couple christmas ago a 28" brown was caught at the Steam Plant.

My guess is they either get caught up in heavy water flows or end up following pockets of cooler water in the hot summers. I really don't know though.

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it due to other commitments, but the interfering one got moved to July 14th, so I'm in.

And I have open seats on the boat (two open seats max) so if anyone needs a ride, let me know. We'll probably meet up at the park, then drive down and fish below the dam at OH for either stripers or catfish.....or both. I have plenty of gear. If someone has a favorite pole or baits they prefer to use, by all means bring it.

Let's get connected and make final arrangements.

OK, I have one seat left open in the boat.

We'll be checking in at the park, then driving down below OH dam and fishing for cats and stripers below the dam. Then we'll load back up and head to the park for lunch and check in.

PM me if you're looking for a boat seat.

Please put me down to attend on 6/30/12. The only lake I've fished in TN was Dale Hollow. So I'm excited to see a new area. I tried to see if anyone else had an opening on their boat but got lost in the 8 pages of posts. Anyone still have a spot? Also, what still needs to be brought to the cookout?

Thanks for the organizing. Sounds awesome.

This is a first for all of us ... I will supply 80 pounds of Charcoal and lighter ... and it we will keep the supplied grills going ... you might want to bring a small portable grill for yoyurself just incase especially if you have wife and kids ... I know Kids ... EAT NOW !!! ...

For the folks who are bringing their familes ... I would provide for yourself just to make sure ... The folks that are bring beans, salads, buns, brats , chips for the masses ... whatever we really don't know right now ... If everyone would list for Don what and who is bringing what it would be great and we can lay everything out on Tables etc ...

We know we are going to have a least 30 members there ... now family members is a different ballgame as far as covering food ... we have no count ... running blind ... This will be a learning experience for the future ... see above for possibly another venue <'TK>< ;)

Old Hickory has lots of boat traffic on the weekends in the summer most anywhere. At least Lagardo is in a creek arm off the main lake. There are places around there to get away from the traffic. A kayak fisherman has to learn these things. :)

Okay, I checked out LaGardo ... Yep to crowded and to busy and $$$ ...And little shade I went by Martha Gallatin Rec Area today ... It is about 3 miles North on Hwy 109 right at the foot of the Gallatin Bridge on the left ... I was there at 2:00PM ... It was like it was back in the 70's when GABA use to hold all of it's Tourneys out of there except it's better with a lot of improvements and no $$ fees ... (There were no boats in the parking lot ... In fact no vehicles at all except the Summer Rec attendants trailer.

large parking area .... a covered pavilion, about 5 more Picinic tables with nice grills all under shade trees and a back cove where you can beach your boat ... right at the tables and pavilion ... a perfect place ...

Gates open @ 6:00 AM ..

Directions ... Going North to Gallatin from I-40 you are on HWY 109 North ... You will go approx 11 miles and you will top a hill and see the bridge and construction below ... There will be a storage facility, a Garage and Quick Mkt next to a small Strip mall . At the end of the strip mall turn left ... go 100 yds and you will see it on the right .. (note this is the last chance to turn off of 109 before you cross the bridge )

I think this will take care of all the congestion, parking problems, Beaching boats and SUN ... <'TK>< :)

Do we have to check in at the park BEFORE we fish?

Me and my boat crew were planning on fishing below OH dam and that's 38 minute drive from the park. If so, what is the earliest we can check in so we can still get to the dam and have time to fish.

Did you say weigh in is at 12:30?

UH OH! With no rain in sight, OH might not be generating any current for the foreseeable future. Could be tough fishing below the dam.

At least they are "spilling" some to keep the river flowing. Hopefully that will produce some current for the shad/skipjack/stripers to feed in.

From what I been hearing they are keeping all the spillways rolling to accommodate the lock and any barge traffic!!
For some reason I can't find old hickory dam generation schedule. Cordell hull has been spot on with its schedule.

Okay I see a few post has been made and most have been answered about the upcoming "Gaithering" ... I will go by Office Max and see if they have some type of sticky back label we can use for the name tags ... Please put your FTI handle (username) on the tag as well as the Name you put on your Income Tax Form ... :D When filling out..

This is a first so there are no hard, set in concrete times start or finish ... Fishing or cooking ... This is just going to be a good fellowship meeting ... and a learning curve for next year... Would like to get the Charcoal going by atleast 12:30 PM ... If you catch some nice fish and want to show them off and have some pic's taken that would be good ... If not, being fishermen, we all have stories about the one that got away !! ...

There was a list started by Don a few pages back about what some folks are bringing ... I am sure there will be some extra goodies, but make sure you bring what you want to cook and drink ... At this point the food thing is a little loose so be prepared;)

By Popular demand it seems this would be a better decision ... Lets wait until October .... Hopefully it will be cooler and maybe we'll get some rain by then .... <'TK>< :)

I'm good with postponing it. I'll be fishing with jad2t and MNfisher that morning below OH dam. But we'll quit when it gets uncomfortable and go back to the AC.

See y'all in the fall.

Glade you had postpone it.

I hope this weather won't last long

I'm relieved it's being postponed too. It's 8:00 p.m. right now, the sun has gone down, and it's STILL 104 degrees outside! That's just brutal.

Today's high was 109. That is the highest temperature ever recorded in Nashville for any day of the year. And we're not even in July yet.

bd, you know I don't know where they get these temp records ... I can remember back in the early 80's in Gallatin a rash of heat that lasted about a week and I saw the $$ bank temps reading 113 deg. But thank the God of nature that we have low Humidity now ... running 16 % to 23 % (This is Arizona weather) .. If the humidity was higher we would have some rain !! It has not rained at my house since April ... It has rained North and South but not where I live !!!??? ...

My pond has dropped 3 feet and I am running my aerator 24/7 just to try to keep the $100 worth of Bream I stocked 4 weeks ago ... I was only running the Aerator 8 hours a day until a big fish kill ... Pond dropped to low ... No OXY (not a temp problem) I filled two commercial trashcans with dead 2 to 4 pound bass, Large bream, gizzard shade, carp, and cats ... Thank goodness for the buzzards ... They cleaned up all I could not reach for about three days ... It was beginning to smell worce than a pig farm around here until they showd up !!

I have an UN-insulated metal building in front of my Old Outboard Barn which is my shop .. ... I usually see 100 deg's in the summer I have 8 fans going and we get use to it ... I never complain !!! I'll take hot over cold any day in my old age !!! I hate Cold !! Today it read 116 deg ... No problem ... Low Humidity ... I HATE COLD ... I will never complain about How Hot it gets ... as long as I am cool when I eat and sleep LOL !! :D ... Plus the Millers thru the day easies the pain !! ;) <'TK><

PS ... I am going to go thru all of the post from the beginning of the first gathering interest that Don brought up ... I am going to ask for a volunteer committee to work with me and Don (TNJUG) to make our Oct. Gathering a more organized event ... Most of this can be done thru the the website or private messages or email ... Then as we get closer to the date; I want to invite the committee to my place so we can finalize it ... And eat a Hot dog and drink a coke or whatever ...

Newbie would you be interested ... also anyone else ... There were so many who seemed to be really pumped ... Lets hear from you ... Don is the Daddy Rabbit of this and we will work together ... <'TK>< :)

bd, you know I don't know where they get these temp records ... I can remember back in the early 80's in Gallatin a rash of heat that lasted about a week and I saw the $$ bank temps reading 113 deg.

Keep in mind that temperatures across a given area aren't completely uniform. Within several miles, some places will tend to be a little hotter or cooler based on air flow, exposure to sun, elevation, etc. Last night I was driving home with the window down through an area on the edge of the Plateau, and I would hit patches of air in certain hollows that were different enough in temp that I could feel it get hotter or cooler.

Even if a bank thermometer is calibrated to be truly accurate (a big if), it's most likely sitting in a black-top parking lot where the temps are going to register several degrees higher than what is probably being noted at the recording station.

Those bank thermometers in Gallatin might have registered 116 when the station hit 109 Friday.

Your absolutely correct bd, I have experienced these same temp changes while riding my motorcycle, jeep and such at night especially in the rural settings ... And I understand about some of the accurracy of the suspected Bank thermometers.

It's kind of like the "Global Warming " advocacy group placing there instrumentation near heat exchange sources in industrial areas ... Sorry bd :p The two just went together .... LOL !! <'TK>< :)
