Chasin gills on a fly rod part 2

I ventured out to my little "spot" again.

This time trying a red/white popper on the 5wt fly rod. Roll casting it out across the moss patches then high sticking it as the popper skittered on top of them back.

Had several blow ups from gills then a large dark figure cruised up quickly. Definitely a bass and definitely big. It was then I went from one of the highs of sight fishing to the lows.

He moved in closer, big splash, light tight, FISH ON!........unfortunately this beat him to it.

A few casts later I did manage a bass but had a time getting him out of the grass bed on 2 lb tippet.

Now things got interesting...

I have officially found a species to target that not only is a bugger to bring in but jumps equally as well as tarpon both in and out of the water.

He blew up the popper on the edge of the grass bed.

HAHA! I have NEVER seen that before!!! That is the funniest thing I think I have seen on the end of a fishing pole!

I had never seen that either. Heck, I couldn't figure out what it was because of how much it pulled down in the weed bed until it's back legs came up out of the water.

Nice Travis, I enjoy playing with the 5WT and gills myself. That frog has some skinny legs for such a large body. When I was young I had a place that I would catch some big frogs with a with a 7" plastic worm. They would never get the hook, just would grab the tail and wouldn't let go.

hahaha wow I've never heard of someone catching a frog on a flyrod, that's going to make a great fishing story for many years to come

That frog has some skinny legs for such a large body.

I thought they looked a little slim. Also, the bass should have been a little better for his size. He was too skinny. There must be a population issue there.

If you need help with the frog population I can help. I can bring kayaks and gigs in the summer. I had never gigged off them until last year and it's a great platform (stealthy, and dry).

As a kid growing up in WI a uncle of mine would go "frog fishing" late in the afternoon. He would put a piece of night crawler on a small hook and work it in the catails for bull frogs, I remember him with a 5 gallon bucket full of frogs, (he had a screen on top to keep them from hopping out). I went with him one time, he would drop the bait till it just touched the water, he would bounce it lightly and within a couple minutes there would be several frogs coming for an evening meal. He would then move the bait to the biggest frogs and put it right in front of their nose and they would suck it in with their tongue. Gosh that goes way back............lol

I remember as a kid, I used to dangle small red leadhead jigs over the bullfrogs head and 100% of the time they would jump up and grab it! Oh the joys of being 8 up at the cabin!
