Crappie Trolling

Managed to get in two hours of crappie trolling on Percy Priest Monday afternoon after work before a massive storm blew in and forced me off the lake. The fishing was good while it lasted and I put 11 keepers in the cooler before I had to leave. Trolled 18-22 fow, at 1.7-2.0 mph with 300 series bandit cranks. Baby bass and crawfish were the colors I used and they didn't really seem to have a preference between the two. Hoping to get out again Friday morning for a nice slow troll before it gets too hot.

Nice!!!!! thats a productive 2 hours! ive totally dropped the ball on my summer crappies this year. i need to get out there and put some time on the water and fillets in the freezer!

Nice! Yeah I gotta get out and do that. I love doing it. Do you troll with your bow mount? Or can you go slow enough with your outboard?

My outboard (25hp Johnson) will go slow enough for trolling plus it is light enough to get me in the skinny water for my other favorite type of fishing.;)

If that was directed to me, i need to use my bow mount. In order for me to use my outboard at dale hollow, my boat looked like a "just married" car. I had all kinds of stuff tied to my boat dragging in the water. Finally settled on a 5 gallon bucket with my anchor tied into it. Lol. Slowest i got the was 1.8.
I just need a drift sock. Or back troll.

I have seen where guys have 2 props on board. 1 for trolling, and 1 for speed/cruising.

The anchor in bucket combo worked pretty good. I tied an end of rope to each tie down grommet in the back creating a "V" for me to attach another short rope with my bucket. The hard part was making turns. It was really slow. Im gonna get me a drift sock and attach it to the bow so it sits about halfway back under the boat. Back trolling works really good, but if you dont have the shields on each side of the motor, any waves come over the back of the boat.

Nice mess of crappies there Titan, not bad at all for 2 hrs of fishing, I have not fished in so long it is sickening! ,keep them post and pics coming!

I'm not sure but you may be able to adjust the idle speed down. I know on my outboard it is adjustable.

Were you rolling bluffs or the main channel ledges? I wish I could get over there during the week when all the traffic isn't there, best I've done is putting in at 5:00 and fish till the armada of ski boats and jet skies arrive about 10:30. End of September won't get here soon enough for me.

I will have to say everything I know about Crappie trolling I owe to Merv, (aglesssone) ... http://fishingtn.com/showthread.php?t=7376 ...

But the question of trolling from the main motor is the question ... I have a 50 HP four stroke Yama pushing a heavy deep vee Great lakes walleye boat . I installed a troll automatic from Cabela's ... My HP 998 has recorded speeds of .4 MPH with this rig ... Now that is to slow for fishing and boat handling... Like previously stated 1.5 to 1.7 MPH is ideal for JPP crappie.. Now for smaller HP outboards Cabela's doesn't offer one under 30 HP and it is manual ... Not sure what BPS has ...Need to check it out ... They beat socks and buckets ... <'TK><:)

Ive considered getting one of those as well.
I try my best to do as little trolling as humanly possible so i dont know if investing in one of those is my best option.
May be the route i take though if i start doing more trolling (lord help me) lol
