We're out camping on Cordell hull for the weekend and we go to put my boat in the water and it starts in neutral but as soon as you try to put it in gear it dies. It doesn't seem like a fuel problem as it immediately cuts off instead of slowly dying. Is there something I can do to fix this? By pass the safety switch? Thank you!

Check the Kill switch check to make sure there is no h20 in tank

Don't forget the tank needs to vent.

Will the engine idle and rev while in Neutral? If not it may be fuel related. If it will rev and idle well it is electrical in nature...check neutral safety switch for fouling.

Yes it idles and revs well in neutral. How do I go about checking the neutral safety switch?

Need Manufacturer, Year, HP for a look up.
Pull Cowl trace shift mechanism check for obvious problems on engine, shift/engage and determine the function is correct and not loose and contacting switch.
Will it go into shift in reverse without dying?

My Merc did that at Dale Hollow a few years ago. I checked everything I could think of. Took it to Bobby at Lakeshore Marine and come to find out, the flywheel wore a hole into a vacuum line. Easy fix luckily

I agree with thehick, hello new to the site bit I had an evinrude 115 that did that one spring on the first outing of the year. Took it to my marine guy and it turned out to be a vacuum line of some sort.

I believe you are on right track with switch without knowing motor. Switch is located on driver side of motor. Move shifter and you should see it where linkage is moving. I believe you can unhook it. Sorry for looking so late.

Did you find your problem.

Not yet. I haven't looked at it since we got back. Thinking about just bypassing it and wiring the ignition switch straight to the starter

Okay so I finally got to put the boat on the muffs today and it ran and would still run when it went into gear? I didn't fool with anything on it so this strikes me weird. Going to go drop it back in the water tomorrow to see if it does it with back pressure on the prop. Any ideas guys?

I had nearly the same experience. Shop cleaned out the carb (1993 Yamaha Pro Vee 200) and it ran fine. I switched over to Rec90 since then and all my motor problems went away.

How much did it cost of you don't mind me asking?

I think is was somewhere around $200. I think it was all labor.

Okay thank you. How long did it take and did you have to pay the 200 as soon as you picked your boat up?
