New Kayaker on the Board!

I am officially a kayaker! I purchased a Jackson Big Rig this morning and plan on learning to use the kayak. Purchased at Caney Fork Outdoors and will pick it up next week (10% off right now). I have to clean out my garage, move the stuff in the back of the pickup to the garage so that the new kayak can fit into the bed of my truck, and make wifey think I am cleaning our the garage!

Looking forward to getting the kayak rigged. I will be fishing in the Elk River above Tims (and below Woods) for Stripers when they run up river this Spring.

A question for you Yakers, how should I mount my Lawrence Transducer?

I'm adding a FF to my Native in a few weeks. I opted to use a magnetic transducer mount. Supposed to be super secure and easy to remove/move. My new Garmin is a side view, so I can't use a shoot through the hull install.

I have the FF and transducer mount, just no FF, as it's back ordered. I'll post my install when it's done.

Congrats. You can look at a Ram arm or Mad Frog Liberator arm.....use a Cell Block.....many ways to do it.

I've used the Madd Frog products, good stuff and durable. I've always built/made a waterproof (?) battery box for my 12v deer feeder battery using a waterproof box from wally world and some goop & wires, etc. I then use a soft sided cooler to hold the box inside the hull, use a watertight thru the hull connector to run the wires. I just remove the battery from the hull for transport and charging. google what you're trying to do and you come up with lots of hits on various yak forums. Enjoy.

You'll need a good battery, lithium ion is the lightest battery you can get.
Pricey but about a third as heavy as a regular battery and good for up to 3000 charge/discharge cycles vs 500 for a regular deep cycle.

Next on my list of want/need/gotta haveit!

Whew! $3,500.00 for a battery! would be awesome to have that kind of peace of mind knowing your not gonna have to get a new battery every few years though.

Congrats on joining the plastic navy. I like the liberator mount for my fishfinder because of the ability to remove it so easily and slide it forward along the tracks. The only downside is the transducer arm gets loose and can swing out of the water if you're trolling and paddling fast. You have to remember to tighten the bolt before a trip or it will happen every time. I know you troll a lot, and so do I, so it's something to keep in mind.

Merv, you have to be a rich fishing guide to afford those batteries. If the battery runs down, I can always paddle back to the boat ramp!

Congratulations on the new battleship. There are many ways you can mount your transducer like Mikey said with a magnet "which I've never done", like Alpha said with a "Mad Frog, or RAM", and Jad2t recommending the Mad Frog.

I've used the Mad Frog, RAM, and also have used Lexell. The Lexell is an adhesive you put inside the hull of your kayak and set the transducer in and it adheres the transducer to the inside bottom of your hull.

I like the RAM arm the best of the three that I've used.

As for power it depends on what you're running. I run an Elite 7 CHIRP, and I have a 14Ah battery which gets me 2 to 2.5 day trips, and an 18Ah battery which gets me 3 day trips, all depending on what settings I'm running.

Most people who are running 4&5" screens are getting away with 5Ah or 7Ah batteries which are much lighter.

I would be careful going Lithium on a kayak. Kayak fishing can be a wet sport, and water and Lithium Batteries don't mix well, they are very volatile.
